Transport and movement The mixed-use development ensures that journeys can be undertaken by foot and as such negates the need for longer journeys to be made by less sustainable modes of transport. High quality public realm underpins this aspiration and ensures that pedestrians and cyclists are prioritised.A network of new and improved safe routes and connections will link the site to stations and bus stops, open spaces at Deptford and Pepys Parks, the River Thames and to existing and new amenities. New crossings will be provided on Evelyn Street and Grove Street and the opening of the underside of the Oxestalls Road bridge along the route of the old canal. They will provide well defined pedestrian links to and from the site. Consolidated vehicular accesses to the site will reduce existing 'friction' on roads and no vehicular access is proposed on Evelyn Street. The access strategy and site design will ensure that traffic movements across the site are minimised. Car parking will be provided at a modest ratio and is to be located in areas likely to cause least impact on the public realm. Dedicated car club spaces will enable access for all to cars when required. Safe, secure and accessible cycle parking is to be provided to help promote cycling as a practical and viable alternative to driving. The Transport Strategy continues to be developed in consultation with TfL and Lewisham Council, taking account of any additional trips on the network and other development sites in the area, including Convoys Wharf. The strategy supports improvements in capacity and frequency of bus, rail and new river services, as well as improvements to existing and new cycle infrastructure and walking routes. The Transport Strategy will help to ensure that sustainable travel patterns are adopted at the outset by residents and employees alike. |
